An ASIC (Aviation Security Identification Card) is an Australian ID card that proves that the cardholder has undergone the appropriate security checks and deemed suitable to enter secure areas of an airport. These cards are issued by CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority). You will be required to fill out a CASA ASIC application online if you need access to security-controlled areas of an airport in Australia. Those under 18 years of age must display an ASIC; however, they are not required to undergo the same security checks as those 18 and over. If you hold an ASIC, you will need to apply for CASA ASIC renewal every two years, with one exception: If you filled out your CASA application online before you turned 18, your ASIC will remain valid for six months after your 18th birthday, and you will need to renew it before it expires.

Who can apply?

If you require regular access to a secure area in an Australian airport that also has Regular Public Transport operations, you must apply for an ASIC. Only individuals with an operational need to enter these areas may apply. It’s important to note that the purpose of the ASIC program is not only to prevent terrorist activities in the airport, but also to protect facilities, equipment, and aircraft from tampering. Similar systems exist in other countries including New Zealand, the United States, and Canada. Those who wish to use their CASA-issued flight crew licences and do not require access to secure areas must apply for background security checks. Provided the security checks are clean, they will receive an AVID (Aviation Identification).

Types of ASIC

White, Red, and Grey are the three types of ASIC available. The appropriate type for you depends on the level of access you require. Your operational need determines whether you require a Grey ASIC (for access to landside security zones), a Red ASIC (for access to airside security zones), or a White ASIC. The White ASIC is a newer, role-specific type of card issued to those who do not require access to secure areas but still require a valid background check. Those eligible for White ASICs are staff members or contractors of a Known Consignor, an ASIC issuer, or a VIC (Visitor Identification Card) issuer. All three cards look the same except for the background colour; they each feature the cardholder’s name, photo, and Aviation Reference Number (ARN) as well as an airport code designation that authorises access to either a specific airport or airports nationwide.
